Job interview questions for helpdesk positions are usually very specific. The questions aim to uncover the job candidate’s technical skills as well as his soft skills needed to do the job satisfactorily.

Here are some of the general questions that the interviewer may ask you:

Interview Questions For Helpdesk Positions:

– How did you hear about our products and company?
– What do you think of our products or similar products? Do you use them regularly?
– What are your strengths and weaknesses?
– What can you contribute to the company?

To help you think about your answers, here’s a list of some of the most challenging questions (and suggestions on how to answer them) that an interviewer is most likely to ask an applicant for Helpdesk Positions.

What was your worst experience as a helpdesk assistant?
Stick to the factual details of the story and avoid too much negativity when you re-tell it to your interviewer. For example, do not focus on how the customer was rude to you. Instead, tell the interviewer how you were able to resolve the issue.

What do you think are the most important characteristics of a helpdesk assistant?
Name three to four important characteristics of a helpdesk assistant and explain why you chose them. Make sure that you mention that you possess some or all of the characteristics that you mentioned by giving some examples of how you demonstrated these characteristics.

When solving a desktop problem, do you prefer to work with the end user, your peers, or on your own?
This is a questions that attempts to determine your teambuilding skills and how you would fit within the organization. Communicate that you have what it takes to work in a team environment, which includes your co-workers, vendors and end-users.

How do you set up new employees?
This question aims to know your knowledge of common practices within the IT industry. The IT department is critical in a new employee’s productivity by ensuring that the IT resources and tools are made available to them immediately. Talk about the tools that you previously helped a new employee with, such as setting up security passwords, helping with their desktop installation etc.

What are the differences between the Operating Systems?
Not all companies have the same operating systems so the interviewer wants to know your level of familiarity with the operating systems that he will ask you in this question. Make sure that you’ve prepared beforehand by reviewing the different operating systems. Make it clear to the interviewer which ones you are highly knowledgeable in.

There are other possible questions that the interviewer may ask of you. Just remember to prepare beforehand by doing research and reviewing on IT tasks and responsibilities. Be ready to show proof or certificates of classes or seminars that you’ve attended. Understanding the helpdesk role in an organization will help you answer the interview questions.
