Management Training: An Overview

Managers face various challenges in supervising people and managing systems and projects, and management training prepares them for this.
Some companies conduct their own management training through workshops or seminars. Others send their management staff to conferences or external courses.
Some companies choose to hire professional trainers to conduct weekly sessions on various management and supervisory topics.

Main benefits of management training. By training the management team, they are provided with a broad sense of leadership knowledge, skills and techniques. New trends in management develop regularly, and management trainings ensure that the management team is updated with the latest in business management.

Empowering the manager. Management training programs enables the manager to feel that the company values him and his team, thereby increasing teamwork and employee morale. Supporters of these kinds of training programs report an increase in productivity and reduced turnover rate amongst the departments whose managers received training.

Internal and external training programs. A management training course includes workshops that aim to prepare existing and prospective managers to face the challenges in supervising manpower and managing resources assigned to them. Some companies provide their own management training, while others send the manager to external training events including conferences, seminars and courses. Other companies obtain the services of professional trainers to offer weekly sessions at the workplace.

The training curriculum. The following topics are usually included in the curriculum of management training: effective communication, motivating employees, managing business meetings, delegation skills and coaching. Additional topics address initiatives related to diversity, corporate social responsibility, ethics and emotional intelligence.

Management training is a continuous process. There are bumps along the road leading to effective implementation of management trainings. However, the company must realize the value it adds to their management team, most especially those with lesser experience. Budget constraints, disruption of work, and sometimes even the manager’s non-cooperative attitude may prevent the success of these kinds of training programs. Management training is always evolving, so companies must not stop seeking ways to educate their managers.

Management retention, or replacing the talent pool of a company is one of the hardest things for a company to face. With an effective training program, the government is given a head start in anticipating and preparing for such events and is able to avoid the problem of replacing a managerial position with an inadequate replacement.
